From Maine to Washington State and Back Again: A Shellfish Tale

Kyle Pepperman & Evan Young Downeast Institute / Blue Hill Bay Mussels

Come hear about the latest technologies and culture strategies used on the west coast to grow all types of bivalve shellfish. We will discuss our experience visiting mussel, clam and oyster hatcheries, farms and processing plants in Washington state. Shellfish is big business in Washington with many small and large farms growing a diverse assortment of bivalves in the intertidal and subtidal. We'll examine how these farms have become vertically integrated and remained resilient in a changing environment and social landscape. And yes, there will be geoducks!
